Sustainable Wine Packaging

Swapping EVA for recycled material without changing the box structure is the most common mistake we see. Paper-based inserts have less rebound and lower surface precision. The box has to compensate. This page explains which sustainable structures work for wine and where they need support.

Why the Structure Has to Compensate

Swapping EVA for a recycled material and changing nothing else is a common failure point. Paper-based inserts have less rebound and lower surface precision than EVA. The structure has to compensate with neck capture, base support, four-point contact and angled location. When the structure is right, the material gap matters much less.

Bottle control remains the same as our standard insert rule. The bottle is held at four points and there is no unsupported neck or shoulder. We shake for ten seconds, tilt to 45 degrees and invert. A sustainable insert must pass those same checks before we sign off on the structure.

Moulded Pulp Is the Most Mature Option

Moulded pulp is the most mature wine insert option. It gives adequate shock absorption and load capacity, is recyclable, and requires tooling. We use it in rigid and foldable boxes where bottle count and dimensions justify the tool. Once the mould is approved, the part is repeatable.

Paper-based composites suit lighter bottles and gift combinations, but they rebound less than EVA and need extra wrapping structure. We do not recommend them for champagne. Moulded pulp can be shaped to support the wider shoulder and base, but it still needs four-point contact and no unsupported neck.

Honeycomb and Corrugated for Export Work

Honeycomb and multi-layer corrugated suit foldable and higher-volume export work at three plies or more. They hold up in stacking and vibration better than single-ply paper trays. We specify them for wine shipping boxes where the box itself must carry load, not just the insert.

Kraft paper bags, washable kraft paper and felt bags pair well with these shippers. Greyboard with specialty paper works for rigid outer boxes that sit on a shelf. The outer material can be recyclable without weakening the three-ply corrugated or honeycomb structure inside.

What We Do Not Recommend

We do not recommend single-ply paper trays. They have insufficient load capacity. Low-density recycled stock collapses under bottle weight. Soft fibre wadding gives poor location. Untreated materials without moisture resistance are not suitable for sea freight. None of these hold a bottle through a 1.2 m drop or a 40 kg top load for 24 hours without movement, so we avoid them in shipping builds.

Texture, Not Plastic, Reads Premium

Premium feel comes from texture, not plastic. Linen-finish stock, matt lamination, embossing and restrained foil read as more considered than a plastic tray. We can carry that finish across greyboard boxes, corrugated shippers and matching kraft or felt bags without changing the structural insert underneath.

The printed surface can be subtle and still feel higher-end than a glossy plastic window. The buyer sees a complete box, not a material gimmick. Sustainable packaging should be judged on how well it protects the bottle, not on replacing one material with a weaker one.
